It is curious to note how in this complicated world, where the economic crisis is massacring the faith of so many, and in spite of this, more than ever before, people are turning to angels.
Posters and pictures with their images, websites or print media that depicts them, dolls with angel faces and attributes, or even fashion shows with models wearing lingerie and angel wings. Everything conspires so we are continually remind that these adorable being are there to help in any way they can.
Angel Enthusiasts
Although the press is called the fourth power due to its undeniable influence in today's society, the fact is this interest in angels did not come by it, but rather through the publication of the best-sellers This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness, both books by the author Frank Peretti, which described how angels influence people's lives and how to access them.
The popularity of these books in the nineties, already had a precedent in the seventies, Angels: God's Secret Agents by Billy Graham.
The New Age movement, not so popular in this first decade of 2000, has notoriously influenced this angel mania, as well. They love angels and have developed a series of non-biblical ideas on angels, something that until now had not emerged in religion.
What new agers like about angels is that they are able to give human beings a spirituality that God has not been able to give them. In other words, while they see that God can be punishing (as well as good), angels are all sweetness and behave in a friendly and loving manner.
People who love angels and, above all, those who follow the New Age movement say that they are beings capable of providing joy and happiness, of helping in terms of health, love, and work, and are able to rid us of everything that concerns us. Therefore, they are wonderful wildcards, always willing to help and comfort us, especially because we know they are there, and they will not let us down.
Another theory as to why angels are all the rage is that we are living a horrible time of crisis, international conflict, and so on, and we have no choice but to go to these higher beings, so they may give us a hand and life may go on its natural course, starting a new period in history.
Other theorists, such as Burham, argue that the essential role of angels is to help us face death without fear, because only our bodies die and we move on to a higher plane with their help, and therefore, in these chaotic times, they are more present than ever.
