One of the most primitive methods of divination is the reading of coffee grounds, in other words the interpretation of the figures and signs left by coffee in a cup or coffee grounds.
Although in general this practice is attributed to France, it is most likely that this method of divination originated in Africa or Asia.
Nevertheless, the Italian Tomas Tamponelli was the first author of a book written on this topic. This manual dates back to the seventeenth century.
A ritual is needed to perform a reading of coffee grounds,
starting with the concentration of the person who prepares the coffee and the one who’ll read the contents of the cup.
It is also possible for one person to prepare the coffee and then interpret the signals.
In any case, coffee grounds may be read in two ways: on a plate (the dregs left in the coffee pot are read on a plate) or in the cup (the coffee is drunk and the stains at the bottom of the cup and on its walls are interpreted).
You only need coffee (insoluble) and some fine sugar.
With the use of a plate, the coffee grounds are placed on a white cloth.
It is squeezed and the stain that appears is interpreted.
The grounds left on the surface of the plate are also carefully observed.
For the other system, a white cup must be used for the ritual.
Coffee is prepared in a classic Italian-style coffee pot (not electric) and once it has been drunk, after waiting a couple of minutes, a query is made out loud, and the cup is turned over and placed on a plate.
After five minutes, the signs that may appear are interpreted. In both cases, it is best to be carried away by the first impression of what the shapes seem to represent.
With the plate, the different areas of the plate represent the past, present, and future.
With the cup, if a hat appears at first, it is better to think that this object in particular is being represented rather than think whether it could be, besides a hat, a rock or a house, for example.
The bottom of the cup represents relationships, the walls will speak of the present, and the rim, the future.
