Cromniomancy is also known as divination by crystal ball.
It was apparently born in the Middle East and is one of the most primitive divination methods.
This system was preceded by divination with mirrors, which was used in different lands, such as Syria, China, and Greece.
Later on, in Egypt, polished metal spheres came into use and, in time, they were replaced by crystal balls.
Aristotle, Alexander the Great, and John Dee – counselor to Queen Elizabeth I – are some of the historic figures that
are
known to have used this divination method, which has been dropping in use with the appearance of newer ones.
But how does cromniomancy work?
By observing the crystal ball, which lies on a black piece of cloth, the seer can perceive colors, movement, and shapes within the crystal. The room where the practice takes place should be scarcely lit, preferably by candlelight. The seer will start by passing his or her hands on the surface of the ball to magnetize it. It may take some time before the first images appear. Once manifested within the crystal ball, the seer will concentrate and interpret them as past, present, or future events.
Each shape and color that the seer observes is given with a unique and specific meaning.
For example, if there is ascending movement within the ball, this is taken to be a positive omen.
If, however, movement looks descending, then the presages won’t be favorable to the person who seeks divination of a query.
Red, yellow or orange clouds mean melancholy or sadness; while blue and green mean happiness.
Black clouds signal bad times, while white clouds are a good omen.
This method’s effectiveness depends highly on the seer’s ability and sensibility, as these forms, figures and colors that manifest within the crystal ball can come in a multitude of tones, variations and subtleties that require interpretation.
This method is to be practiced by real seers, for the crystal ball is only a medium that does not physically yield any answers. It is through the crystal ball that shapes and figures are seen and interpreted.
