This practice works especially well when combined with meditation. Observation of the shapes formed by the smoke, its trajectory, its intensity and color, is fundamental.
Incense is a preparation of different vegetable resins of pleasant and intense aroma. Animal or vegetable essential oils are frequently added to produce a smoke of pleasant smell. Incense is used in religious, health and aesthetic activities to create a relaxed and harmonic ambiance.
It has great presence in oriental societies, such as the Chinese and Japanese; it is also used in the Catholic and Orthodox churches. Use of incense by everyday people at their homes is very common.
The use of incense in libanomancy is a remote divination method that was used in very ancient civilizations. Pleas and petitions were made around a fire, or a question about the future was formulated. Then the incense was thrown into the fire so its smoke column would rise to the skies and take the pleas with itself.
According to the way incense was consumed, interpretations were made in one way or another. For example, if the incense was consumed with intense flame, then this would be taken to mean that the pleas were being heard. If, however, it did not produce flame and smoke was slow to come out or non-existent, then this was taken to mean the pleas had gone unattended.
Through libanomancy, all manner of divinations were made, except those concerning death and marriage.
