Ornithomancy was one of the most popular for divination of the future in ancient Greece. The term comes from ornis – bird, and manteia – divination.
This method was based on a making a series or predictions by looking at the outer aspect of birds, as well as their flight, their song, migration, etc.
It was used not only in ancient Greece, but in Rome as well.
In ancient Rome, priests and augurs would do prognostication during ceremonies called augurs.
They had huge power and no roman, especially if
occupying a public position, would make any decisions without first consulting the augurs.
To take the auspices, augurs would use different methods, one of which was ornithomancy.
In Greece, the most popular ornithomancer was Tiresias the blind.
To perform his divinations, he would always have a boy with him who would describe the birds’ flight, color, and other such visible signs.Ornithomancy has also been evidenced in popular literature. The French comic book Asterix and Obelix shows Panoramix, the druid, having premonitory visions involving flying bird flocks.
