Tarot Meanings
This is a sketch of this millenary art and the bases it supports itself on to provide meaning for the physical and spiritual lives of humanity.
Let’s see for example:
How to find the card that represents the querent:
You’ll find it by adding the digits of his or her year of birth, for example:
1971 = 1+9+7+1= 18 = The Moon
The meaning of the card tells us of this person’s general characteristics.
Meanings of the Major Arcana cards:
There have been, since ancient times, 22 cards called Major Arcana, which means “mysteries”.
Later, 56 cards were added, composed of Cups, Coins, Wands or Batons, and Swords.
The Magician: Major Arcana (1)
This is the beginning, the start of a new stage. It is connected with the infinite. On the table, there are four elements, and with the wand in his hand, he transforms them, in other words, he represents the power we have to transform the elements. The table is missing a leg; this shows how subtle the magician is, since we live in three dimensions but fail to see the fourth one, the hidden one.
The Magician represents us, with our feet firmly planted on the ground and our heads connected with the infinite.
This card represents: mental agility, transmutation, the ability to transform the elements depending on our need. The key to The Magician is: a beginning and transformation.
It is governed by the planet Mercury.
The High Priestess: Major Arcana (2)
This card represents the esoteric person. It has two columns in the tarot of White, one representing good, and the other representing evil, and this person may be inclined towards one or the other. It shows an alternative ambiguity, speaks of the unseen; it is connected to doubt, as it raises it.
The planet that governs it is the Moon.
The Empress: Major Arcana (3)
It represents mother earth, fertility, fertilization, realization, overcoming conflicts, fruit, childbirth, growth.
It’s ruling planet is Venus.
The Emperor: Major Arcana (4)
It stands for stability, authority, male intuition, quite possibly the father in a family, firmness.
Its ruling planet is Jupiter.
The Pope: Major Arcana (5)
It symbolizes communication; it has to do with religion and culture, the authority of the spiritual world, link between the material and the spiritual. The number 5 in numerology is between 1 and 9, right in the middle, so The Pope is a card that bridges, that joins or unites, brings about agreement, encourages communication.
This card is ruled by Taurus.
Cards that represent humanity:
1) The Magician: It represents us; we have come to transform the elements for our convenience.
2) The High Priestess: The esoteric woman is beyond. It is the ability to choose between good and evil.
3) The Empress: the mother, fertility.
4) The Emperor: the father, order, government.
5) The Pope: faith, religion.
It is important to mention, here, that the Major Arcana cards numbered 1 to 5 represent humanity in all its different stages.
Those numbered 6 to 16 represent actions, the tests we must pass to achieve what we want.
Those numbered 17 to 22 symbolize the end of the Ego; the figures in the sky are seen; the universe is reached. This is why the Major Arcana card, The Tower, represents the break from the Ego; it changes the state of consciousness. We begin to see the entire universe.
