The pendulum was a much utilized method of divination.
A pendulum is a weight that is suspended by a thread, rope or chains that measure anywhere from four inches to a foot in length.
This weight may be round or elongated and is usually made from metal, glass or wood; some even adorned with precious stone incrustations.
It is desirable to have the person whose future is being divined present, but if for any reason the person is not there, then the pendulum to use is one with a hollow area into which is introduced a “witness” – which is a photograph, a lock of hair or even saliva or a piece of paper with their signature. This “witness” is set in the hollow and the process of asking questions begins.
The pendulum is often used to find missing persons, pets or things – and is on occasion used as a map. In that case, it is divided into quadrants and the pendulum is passed over each of the sections. The area where the pendulum starts gyrating instead of oscillating will be
the spot where what is being sought can be found.
The use of the pendulum is simple: the practitioner holds the thread with the index and thumb, taking care so other fingers aren’t touching it. He then suspends the weight on top of the object about which information is desired and, concentrating, the person begins to formulate questions that can be answered “yes” or “no”. A circular movement that is clockwise is interpreted as an affirmative answer, while counter-clockwise is interpreted as negative.
If the pendulum only oscillates back and forth, then it is interpreted that the question was not adequately formulated. The same question must be reformulated and asked again.
In any case, a fundamental premise is that absolute concentration and faith in obtaining a positive answer is necessary when using this divination method so as to obtain satisfactory results.
